Just as gold is tested through rubbing, cutting, heating and beating; so is a man examined on four grounds – liberality, character, efficacy (quality) and action.

For instance the quality of gold is examined in four ways, namely (i) by rubbing it on a touch stone, (ii) by cutting it, (iii) by burning it on fire, and (iv) by beating it with a hammer, similarly the status of a person is also examined in four ways (i) by one’s knowledge (ii) by nobleness and righteousness (iii) by qualities one possesses and (iv) by one’s actions and deeds.
